Why Should I Use a Poster?
Posters are an extremely effective method of advertising or conveying information.
They’re informative, eye-catching, and easy to produce.
However, they’re also easy to get wrong!
When designed well, they can be an incredible tool. But you have to ensure that you avoid some common faux pas to make the most out of your design.
Let’s discuss how you can get the best results and impact from your posters.

Include Relevant Information
Keep the text as relevant to your purpose as possible.
There may be many things you want to say, but it’s not always possible to fit them all onto the page without it becoming difficult to read.
You can only fit so much information on the page. So, you want to highlight the most crucial information over smaller aspects.
Depending on the poster’s purpose, it may be beneficial to include a website name, a social media handle, or even a QR code.
By doing this, you can direct the reader to find further information if they wish to – without overcrowding the space.
Focus on the Visual Impact
The prime reason why posters are so effective is their ability to draw people in through the use of aesthetics.
As a result, it’s vital to have a strong focus on the impact of each of your design elements.
Ensure that the colour palette, font size/style, and images are all relevant to the target audience.
Put yourself in their shoes and try to think about what impact your design would have on you if you saw it.
Would it make you stop and look at it?
Does it stand out?
Is it informative and inspiring?
All of this follows nicely into my next point.
Consider the Target Audience
You need to understand what the people who you’re directing the poster at want to see.
Think about what you’d do if you were trying to convince parents to bring their young children along for play sessions.
You would want to use brighter, more eye-catching colours with interesting imagery as opposed to text-heavy black and white designs.
Here are a few things to consider about the target audience to get you thinking:
- Age – Child, Teen, Elderly, etc
- Age Range – Does it need to appeal to a wide age bracket?
- Personal or Indirect – Is the poster aimed directly at the target audience, or is it aimed at someone on their behalf?*
- Location – Where will you place the poster for it to have the best visibility?
- In some circumstances, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religion may also be relevant.
Always have the target audience running through your mind!
*For example, this could be a parent on behalf of a child. It could also be a teacher on behalf of their student, or a carer for someone unable to take in the given information. Essentially, indirect is when you need to attract someone unable to fully action a response to the poster, so you appeal to the next relevant person who can do it for them.
Think About Placement
Before you start the design, have an idea in your head of where you will be putting the poster.
Its location could impact certain design elements. Therefore, it’s necessary to consider these before you start.
One of the most significant things that would be affected by placement is the size of text and images, and therefore the amount of information that you can fit on the poster.
So, if your posters were in an area where you’re able to get up close it (such as a notice board or in a shop window), it may be that you’re able to add more information.
If your poster is going to be in any area without easy access to get up close, larger text and images will be required to ensure visibility.
