The Pinnacles of Printed Promotional Success

A worker is only as good as their tools!

More than likely, you’ve heard this phrase throughout some point in your life. An effectively designed and quality produced booklet is as good a tool for your business as a pickaxe is to a miner!

Make customers want to come back to your booklet. Do this by utilising the compact and eye-catching space available, and make the most of the amount of information that can be conveyed in it. Think about it this way, how often have you got at least one leaflet in a draw or pinned on a board somewhere?

You’re subconsciously drawn in by the easy to read format, and the ability to excitingly highlight important information.

Take everything you know about your audience, and what they like, then compile it all into an easily shareable format. As a result, you’ll end up with an effective design for one of the best possible methods you can use for publicity.

Booklets are a cheap, functional, and attractive method of promotion for your business!

The Important of Aesthetics – Size, Print, and Bind

Aesthetics are EVERYTHING!

It’s vital to have a look well suited to your target audience in order to get the most out of your booklet.

Below is a summary of the impacts size, print and bind have on your booklets.

For more information on how to get the most of your booklets, check out our blog describing ways to make your booklets stand out from the crowd!

Influence of Size

Size is a much more important factor to consider than you may initially realise. The impact that the size of your booklet has on its effect is often hugely underappreciated.

For example, larger pages allow for more work to be incorporated into the booklet. However, they also come at a higher cost. On the flip side, they may be more accessible if your audience requires larger printed text or more detailed images, which would warrant the extra cost.

Smaller sized booklets generally lend themselves to quick reading, and they’re simpler for the reader to take with them for future reference. This works particularly well for booklets that are designed for providing summaries/support information for products, or for tabletop booklets to encourage customers to pick them up.

What are the standard sizes?

The standard booklet sizes are A4, A5, A3, DL, or Square.

Of course, A3 is your larger booklet, whereas A5 is a smaller option, and A4 is the happy medium between the two. Square can be available in a variety of sizes. However, the most common is 210mm x 210mm. This particular style is becoming more popular amongst businesses as they are a brilliant format for highlighting your services.

So, what size is DL?

DL stands for ‘Dimension Lengthwise’. This size is where an A4 piece of paper is taken and folded into three equal sections – resulting in a final size of 1/3 A4. This size is especially beneficial for showing price listings, as well as for mailing purposes. They fit well in a standard-sized envelope.

In addition to this, other pre-set and custom sizes are available. These may benefit the impact of your booklet by having a different appearance to what customers are expecting.

When designing your booklet, don’t forget to consider the influence you want the information to have on the reader. Contemplate how the sizing of your brochure will help you to achieve the desired effect you want the booklet to have.

Remember, the most seemingly insignificant aspects can have the most substantial impact on your results!

Endless Possibilities

Consider the type of paper you want your artwork to get printed on. Our papers are available in various GSM’s (Grams per Square Metre), as well as different finishes – including gloss or matte. As with any variable aspect, changing the GSM or finish may impact on the final cost of your printing.

As a general rule, the higher the GSM, the thicker the paper, and the better the quality. Of course, this increases the cost, so it’s imperative to think about whether your product will benefit from improved quality. Weigh up the balance between your budget and the expected outcome to determine whether a higher quality will positively influence your return.

Gloss

In terms of finish, gloss paper often gets regarded as the best option for booklets containing images that you want to make pop off the page with vibrant colours. Gloss booklets are also praised for their ability to stand out. This is because their shine attracts the customer, but this can sometimes be a negative of gloss paper as well since it has the potential to impact readability. Glossy paper is also less susceptible to noticeable signs of wear and tear, therefore making it a more durable choice.

Matte

On the flip side, matte gets hailed for its muted appearance and the ease of readability it provides – making it perfect for text-rich booklets. Additionally, matte is usually the preferred paper choice for booklets printed in full B&W as it can help to provide extra depth to images with no colour. The con to matte paper is that some people perceive it as lower quality. Rest assured, the correct application of this paper can yield impressive results.

As you can see, there are many various options to consider when it comes to print type. Make sure you spend some time deliberating what features would provide the best print for your booklet, and why.

Binding is essential in achieving the desired look and purpose.

There are so many bind types to choose from, such as:

  • Staple Binding/Saddle Stitch – The most commonly used booklet bind. A cheap and effective solution to binding your booklet
  • Perfect ‘Glue’ Binding – Best suited to booklets that need an exceptionally professional look. A great option for booklets that are to be displayed.
  • Wire/Ring-O Binding – Mostly used for instruction booklets or any other type which requires the ability for the book to lay flat (such as product example booklets).

Or, if you prefer a DL booklet, the brochure will be folded as opposed to bound.

When choosing your preferred bind style, consider both the cost, finish, and purpose of the bind. For example, if you wanted to give out booklets on the street to reach a sizeable audience quickly, staple bound or DL would be your best options as they’re cheaper. Therefore, you wouldn’t lose as much money from people throwing them away.

However, if you worked in a car dealership and wanted a booklet to display paint types for the vehicle and it’s features, spiral bound is more likely a preferable option. It allows the booklet to be kept open on the desk and easily flicked through, while also offering a professional look.

If you’d like some advice on the best bind type for you, please don’t hesitate to contact us at

FAQ’s for our Booklet Printing Service

Below are some of the frequently asked questions we receive regarding our booklet brochure printing service.

What’s the difference between a booklet and a brochure?

Generally, booklets and brochures are regarded as being the same thing. Some people will say they’re interchangeable terms, whereas others will say there are minor differences. At Day Night Print, we put these both in the same category. The details that can be disputed as the difference between them are aspects we include in our service as part of your quote. For example, elements such as size and bind. So, in terms of what we offer, you can consider them to be the same.

What file type does my document need to be in for me to get it printed?

Preferably, your work should be supplied as a high resolution 300 dpi PDF in CMYK format. If the work provided is less than 300 dpi, the printed document may appear blurred or pixelated. CMYK is the colour format our machines use.

Any work sent in RGB format may experience an unexpected colour shift. We’ll require your document to have a 3mm bleed edge to ensure info isn’t cut off during the finishing process. Occasionally, we can make some alterations. However, they will incur an additional fee.

Although, this is something you would need to discuss with us. If you have any questions about the formatting of your document, please contact our customer services. They are always more than happy to help.

How long will it take for you to deliver my booklet?

Delivery time depends on the size of your order and the delivery option you choose.

Day Night Print is well known for our ability to offer and provide both the same and next day urgent delivery.

If you’re not in a rush, our standard 3-5 day delivery will prove to be a more cost-effective solution for you.

So, your order can be received anywhere between a few hours and five days from the time you place it. You’re in control!

Can I get a sample of one booklet before placing a bulk order?

Yes, this is possible. However, it may incur an extra fee due to us having to print and deliver a single booklet.

Please note, this option is only available on standard orders. This is because we’re unable to provide a sample for confirmation in time for urgent orders.

How many pages does my booklet need to have?

This is dependant on the binding type you opt for. Unless you are happy to have some blank pages in your booklet, the number of required pages are outlined below.

  • Spiral Bound – Multiples of 2 (Think of a notepad, every single double-sided sheet you can tear out is two pages. One on the front, one on the back)
  • Perfect Bound – Multiples of 4 (Same as above)
  • Staple Bound – Multiples of 4 (Front and back are two pages, then each sheet is folded in half to create four pages.)
  • DL – One double-sided sheet to be folded into thirds.
How do I know how to order/structure my pages?

Don’t worry!

Simply send us the pdf with the pages in the order you want them to appear in the booklet.

We’ll format/order the pages for you as a standard part of our service. Remember, our job is to make things as easy as possible and efficient for you.

Is there a maximum sheet amount for staple-bound booklets?

Yes, there is.

We aren’t able to provide you with a specific value for this because it’s dependant on the type of paper you use.

For example, larger GSM papers will have a smaller max amount due to the paper being thicker.

Generally, the value will sit somewhere between 60 – 70 sheets.

We’d advise you to contact us if you’d like to know if we’d be able to staple bind for your specific requirements.

What if my requirements don’t fit the specifications set above?

Not to worry!

Contact us with your requirements, and we’ll be able to discuss options for a custom print job with you.

Customer satisfaction is a priority for us, so if we can do it, we will.

Why should I choose a booklet over other methods such as leaflets or posters?

Booklets contain large bulks of easily digestible information. Also, they attract the reader more by piquing their curiosity.

With a poster or leaflet, you’re likely to read the information and then leave it at that.

If you see an interesting cover to a booklet, you’re more inclined to pick it up and take it with you. Then, you can read the rest of the contents.

Doing this will give you an improved audience reach as more people will actually pick up and take home a booklet.

What will make my booklet stand out?

Good question! The key to an effective brochure that stands out from the crown is an eye-catching design.

You need something that will capture the attention of your audience, so make sure you’re careful when tailoring the content to make it suitable for your purpose.
